Nuggets guard J.R. Smith has pledged to be more mature this season in the wake of a 24-day stint in jail for reckless driving.
“Know every time that I do something it doesn’t affect just me,” Smith to the Associated Press. “It affects my family, my friends, my team, players and coaches.”

The NBA announced today that J.R. Smith of the Denver Nuggets has been suspended without pay for seven games for pleading guilty to reckless driving, in violation of the law of the State of New Jersey, in connection with a 2007 accident resulting in the death of a passenger in Smith’s car, and for prior and subsequent motor vehicle offenses.

Late last week, the Denver Nuggets reported that they have signed shooting-guard J.R. Smith to a multi-year contract. Terms of the deal were not released but it is believed that Smith’s new contract probably is not paying him as well as he had hoped to. In the off-season, very few teams showed interest in Smith, which lowered the financial bar for Denver to resign the player. Smith even told the Denver Post that he had not been approached with any serious contract talks.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have set a target on three-point swingman, J.R. Smith. It is understood that J.R. is looking for more than just the mid-level exception of $5.6 million and if he is dealt to the Cavaliers, it will most likely be a sign and trade deal that will lock him in from four to five years.
