NBA players will be able to take two steps before they have to stop, pass or shoot this season.
The NBA has put into writing a rule allowing players on the move to gather the ball, after driving or catching it, and then take two steps. Throughout NBA history, the rulebook said players could take one step.

NBA commissioner David Stern said Tuesday that the league still projects a drop in revenue in the near future.
Stern told the Salt Lake Tribune that a dip of between 2 1/2 to 5 percent could lead to a significant reduction in the league’s salary cap and luxury tax figures for the 2010-11 season.

The NBA formally announced its new social media guidelines Wednesday, informing teams through a league memorandum that the use of cell phones, PDAs and other electronic communications devices — and thus accessing Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites — is now prohibited during games for players, coaches and other team personnel involved in the game.

The NBA made another offer to its locked-out referees last Friday, and the refs’ lead negotiator removed himself from the talks Monday after that offer was narrowly voted down by the union’s executive board, ESPN.com has learned.

NBA referees believe that a lockout is both imminent and unavoidable after the latest break down in negotiations.
The referees rejected the league’s latest offer by a unanimous vote on Wednesday. The two sides exchanged counterproposals on Thursday, but the talks have ended once again.

The NBA will start the 2009-2010 season without the NBA referees after the league ended negotiations this week.
The impending lockout is based on the referees’ refusal to concede to all of the NBA’s demands for significant cutbacks to the referees’ budget.
