Jordan Farmar
Lakers team doctor has announced that Jordan Farmar needs surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee. The injury, which Farmar sustained after stealing the ball and going for a layup Friday at Miami, has also been confirmed by another Los Angeles based doctor. Farmar now only has to determine the time, date, and doctor for the procedure that could sideline the Lakers guard for up to eight weeks.
“We’re not happy about it, obviously, but this is what we go through in an NBA season,” Coach Phil Jackson said. “These timetables can be four to six [weeks], six to eight [weeks]. We’re looking at a time period that’s significant.”
Thus far, Derek Fisher has been clogging up most of the minutes that Farmar has left behind. Fisher, 34, played another 41 minutes Monday against Memphis after logging 41 Saturday against Orlando.
“We’re really looking at someone that can help Fish manage his time,” Jackson said. “The number of quick, small guards in the league right now has increased significantly, so we’ll probably look at someone’s quickness and speed, not size.”
The Lakers could add another player to their rotation but the belief is that they will turn to Sasha Vujacic to handle the ball for the second unit. There are some concerns, however, that while Vujacic has no problem pushing the ball, his decision-making abilities are not as good.
