During the opening minutes of Argentina’s semi-final loss to Team USA in Beijing, Ginobili injured his left foot in a play away from the ball and did not return to action. Two months earlier, he had injured the very same spot in his leg during the NBA Playoffs but improved enough to be eligible to play in the Olympics.
The severity of the injury is still unclear but an MRI shows that the leg has not made any significant improvement. Manu Ginobili revealed today that he needs arthroscopic surgery to repair a ligament injury in his left heel. Ginobili also said that he does not know who will perform the surgery or for how long he will be absent from the game.
Prior to the injury, Ginobili was the leading scorer in the Olympics with 20.3 points per game. Argentina ended up taking home the Bronze Medal without their superstar on the court.
